With a combined tenure of 52 years at Cummings Lockwood and impeccable reputations, Sam Schoonmaker and Cindy George joined forces to embark on an extraordinary journey. In 1996, fueled by their shared vision, Sam and Cindy united their expertise to establish a matrimonial law firm that would not only serve families across Connecticut but also foster a sense of belonging akin to a tight-knit family.
By carefully selecting colleagues who embodied their founding principles of Compassion, Confidence, and Commitment, Sam and Cindy created a work environment built on trust and mutual support. This foundation allowed each team member to flourish and find their unique role within the work family. Because of their responsive, client-centric approach, every client receives the utmost care and support, tailored to their individual needs.

In Memoriam (1935-2015)
Attorney Sam Schoonmaker dedicated his career to the practice of family law. He graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Yale University in 1958 and from Yale Law School in 1961. Sam was the first chair of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Family Law Section, chaired the American Bar Association’s Family Law Section, and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is best known in legal circles for the legislative initiative known as “No Fault Divorce,” which replaced the several hundred-year-old fault-based system. In 2014, the Connecticut Law Tribune awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award. READ MORE
Before becoming an attorney, Sam competed internationally in tennis, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. In 2008, he was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame. A loving father and distinguished family lawyer, he was widely respected in the legal community for his combination of boldness, integrity, empathy, keen intellect, and common sense.

Cynthia Coulter George

Attorney George was a founding member with a focus on complex matrimonial cases, but is most proud of her mentorship of young associates over the years. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a former member of the Academy’s Board of Governors and its counsel, the former President of the Academy’s Connecticut Chapter and previously served as Co-Chair of the Gender Bias Committee of that Academy. In this position she wrote and directed an instructional video on gender bias in the law. She is the former Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Family Law Section. She has published numerous articles on family law and is the author of Connecticut Family Law Citations. She’s also lectured both nationally and within Connecticut on topics including executive employee benefits, business valuations, premarital agreements and trial practice as these topics relate to matrimonial law. She has two children and lives in Greenwich and Jupiter, Florida with her husband, Jeff Harris.
